Current problems in the use of organic UV fi lters to protect skin from excessive sun exposure

چکیده
The evidences of the harmful effects of skin exposure to excessive UltraViolet (UV) radiation, primarily on the development of skin cancer, have increased over the last decade. Therefore, national and international health authorities have encouraged the public to take protective sunscreens, and respectively also everyday cosmetics containing UV fi lters. In these products, a mixture of the UV fi lters, including both inorganic and organic nature, has been shown to be more effective than the individual UV fi lter. However, currently there are concerns about the safety and actual effectiveness of some UV fi lters; especially about certain UV-absorbing compounds (organic UV fi lters). Three cardinal problems are the most questionable. First, that certain UV fi lters are absorbed through the skin resulting in systemic exposure with unknown consequences. Second, that certain UV fi lters show the potential to be adversely endocrine disruptors. Third, that certain UV fi lters are partially degraded by UV radiation, what making them photounstable and unable to fulfi l their basic protective function. The purpose of this article is to discuss these problems.

Background: Sun protection materials have been one of the major concerns in pharmaceutical industry since almost one century ago. Various materials have been found to have such an effect but there are still many unknown substances that have not been discovered. Objective: To introduce a novel mineral-based sun lotion with considerable UV absorption properties compared to commercially available s...
متن کاملCorrelation Between Sun Protection Factor and Antioxidant Activity, Phenol and Flavonoid Contents of Some Medicinal Plants
Long exposure of UV radiation increases risk of skin diseases such as cancer and photoallergic reactions. UV-B (280-320 nm) radiation is mainly responsible for inducing skin problems. Skin protection is a suitable method in the fight against ultraviolet radiation induced damage. Various synthetic agents have been used as photo protective but because of their potential toxicity in humans, they h...

متن کاملThe ABCs of sun protection for children.
Excessive sun exposure in childhood is a critical variable influencing skin cancer risk. Nurses must teach parents how to properly protect their children from excessive sun exposures by demystifying UV radiation and teaching proper sun-protection measures. Protecting children from excessive sun exposure, while not curtailing recreation, should be the goal of all nurses caring for children.
متن کاملVitamin D and the urgency of paying attention to this vital element in the body
Vitamin D is a vital element in the body that plays an important role in the growth and strength of muscles and bones by its effect on calcium absorption from the intestine. Vitamin D biosynthesis begins with the exposure to UV of sunlight from the skin. Cholecalciferol transfers from the skin and the intestine to the liver, and then binds to the DBP protein and eventually enters the kidney to...
